Quran 7:45 "Who hinder (people) from Allah's way and seek to make it crooked, and they are disbelievers in the hereafter."
“Propaganda is a set of the messages intended to influence opinions of the masses, not giving the opponents any opportunity to rebut the idea. Instead of telling people the truth, propaganda often aims at manipulation of ideas to influence the behavior of a large number of people. So, it presents ideas selectively”
Islamic worldview and lifestyle are a threat to western imperialism and Zionist apartheid because Islam challenges their oppression and envisions for Muslims an independent self-determined existence where Muslims will take charge of their countries by Islam. Propaganda against Islam is not new, but it dates to the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It started from the pagans of Mecca.
Prophet of Islam in pre-Islamic Arabia was known as the truthful among the pagans due to his honesty, sincerity and abhorrence of the pagan ways. Prophet was thus respected as a noble person with dignity and trust. When he declared prophethood and preached a revolutionary change among the pagans he became a victim of propaganda. Quran tells us how pagans spread lies about Prophet accusing him of witchcraft, magic and sorcery!
With the rise of Islam and its gradual acceptance among the non-Muslims it caused alarm to rival empires: Persian and Byzantine. They moved swiftly to crush the new Islamic movement but failed and caused the rise of Islamic empire. While Europe suffered in poverty, disease and continuous warfare Islam thrived. The western Christendom decided to wage wars against Islam through propaganda and lies. The first such propaganda came through deliberate mistranslation of holy Quran[1]. Westerners were subjugated people both by the Church and the royalty and Islam would have appealed to them threatening the establishment. The propaganda against Islam was thus a move to sway the people away from Islam and create hostility against it. This environment was easy to exploit for war games as it happened in the form of crusades.
During colonialism the propaganda took place through orientalists who followed the same practice of the crusaders. Various divisive techniques were orchestrated by imperial west through infiltration of Islam by creating movements such as Wahhabism. The same trend went on.
Composition of Propaganda
With the rise of digital media propaganda took a new form and model. Modern propaganda has the following stages:
The ideology and purpose of the propaganda campaign
The ideology of modern imperial propaganda is to continue western imperialism and Zionist expansion into middle east. This is done by demonizing Islam and Muslims.
The context in which the propaganda occurs
This context is when there is an alleged bombing by a Muslim, irrespective of the background and context the media quickly assigns Islamic agenda to the bomber. The context of media is thus Islamophobic. This had happened when Andres Breivik massacred in Sweden, the media quickly but wrongly concluded it was Islam and Muslim who did this.
Identification of the propagandist
The media will often bring in Islamophobic commentators to fuel the propaganda. Examples are the practices of Fox news, RT, BBC and CNN.
The structure of the propaganda organization
Modern media is huge and extended to almost all countries. Mixing fascination with propaganda they continue to work unhindered.
The target audience
The target audience are Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Media’s exploitation of people’s ignorance of Islam is alarming. They will rarely if ever bring in Islamic scholars and will most often bring in anti-Islam anti-Islamist people in the show.
Media propaganda techniques
The most used techniques are dehumanizing and portrayal of the ideology and the enemy as barbaric. Others are described below as well.
Audience reaction to various techniques
Generate hate and support for sanctions, persecution and war against the enemy even at the expense of humanity, privacy and security.
Modern Media Propaganda Techniques
Dehumanize the enemy collectively, their culture and way of life
Pakistan’s nuclear achievement created a certain amount of propaganda by making Pakistan appear threatening. One method used to by propagandists to create an enemy is through the technique of social proof. When we are unsure of ourselves, when the situation is unclear or ambiguous, when uncertainty reigns, we are most likely to look to and accept the actions of others similar to us as correct. By creating the sensation that Pakistan is connected with anti-imperialist nations such as Iran or Syria, early on, the notion becomes all the more believable later, even when no direct evidence is presented.
The Jerusalem Post published an article on Pakistan’s atomic weapons, starting with a reference to the Iranian Foreign Minister. Using the same propagandistic method of creating an enemy through association, the article stated: "Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi’s visit to Islamabad a few days after Pakistan joined the nuclear club seemed to emphasize [the dangers of an ‘Islamic bomb’]". They further connect the countries through religion by using the coined term: Islamic bomb. This kind of sentimental propaganda is what ISIS has used by terms such as Christian west when in fact Christianity is dead in west.
Portray enemy as barbaric
This tactic which is Enemy as Barbarian: threat to culture is intended to create an enemy, by creating a sense that Pakistan is a country that is not worthy of nuclear technology. The idea behind enemy as barbarian is to portray the subject as rude, crude, uncivilized, and animalistic. This same tactic used by western imperialism to bomb and invade Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya and to sanction Iran. Israel too exists on this tactic by portraying the Palestinians as barbaric and Israel as the only democratic country in middle east. The propaganda often assigns Islam with these countries to make it a threat and feared.
However, these western imperialist journalisms promoted and romanticsed French nuclear achievements even though French colonialism in Africa is hundred times worse than any ISIS. For example, the Chicago Tribune’s article on the French test on the day of the nuclear explosion downplayed all military applications of the nuclear technology. It stated: "The initial effect is likely to be the strengthening of President de Gaulle’s position when soviet Premier Khrushchev visits France March 15 (1960).
Bandwagon
It aims at persuading people to do a certain thing because many other people are doing it. Examples include promotion of LGBTQ in Muslim countries and weak scientific studies to support these sexual practices, or pictures of some mob resisting the Islamic rule of Iran giving the sentiment that people are against Islamic rule. In response to this type of propaganda anti-imperial countries have outsmarted the imperial propaganda by showing counter mob for the Islamic rule. Remember the Egyptian coup against president Morsi was also this kind of propaganda where media focused on anti-Morsi mob giving the feeling that Egyptians are against the new democratic president and creating atmosphere of coup.
Testimonial
This propaganda technique uses words of a famous person to promote a particular idea. Examples include the lies of American statesmen in media for invasion of Iraq or statements of Hollywood actors to promote LGBTQ in Muslim countries or abolishment of hijab.
Transfer
In this technique, qualities of a well-known person or organization are associated with an idea to promote or demote it. An example of this is in the American corporate industry such as Boeing who, despite faults in 737 promoted it and everyone bought the lie because Boeing is well established industry. Same is with the defective F-35.
Western media often bring in or show people to promote their anti-Islamist or anti-Islam agenda to talk on Islam who have little or no understanding of Islam or who have no interest of Muslims in heart. Examples include broadcasting of ISIS or al-Qaeda leaders’ speeches about Islam or speeches of gulf royals on Islam.
Repetition
It is when the idea is repeated many times. Technique used by Nazis extensively to demonize the Jews and also being used by modern media to demonize political Islam and Palestinians.
Emotive Words
This is meant to generate negative feelings in the minds of the masses against Islam and Muslims. Wordings such as Muslim girl burnt to death or Muslim girl forcefully married, creating a negative emotion against Islam and Muslims, as if it was her being of Islamic faith that led to this tragedy. Name-calling, also called stereotyping or labeling like this is what is empowering the right wing fascists and generating war hysteria.
Other Techniques
'Quotes out of Context' is a technique of selectively changing quotes to change meanings. It is used in political documentaries. The 'Half truth' technique makes use of a deceptive statement. Double meaning may be used to misinterpret a truth. 'Card stacking' is another propaganda technique, where information is manipulated to make a an idea better or worse. Only the facts in favor of the propagandist are used.
These techniques are used by media in support of Israeli cause against the Palestinians. Media also use these against Islam and Muslims.
Conclusion
Western imperialist and Zionist propaganda have made the world a living hell. Their thirst for power has made them monsters. Propaganda is created and creating future warmongers, haters and mass murderers. It is because children are most vulnerable to different types of propaganda techniques. They cannot reason to decide whether a message is propaganda or not. They are highly fascinated by the media and influenced by the behavior of their peers. They assimilate propaganda promiscuously.
In the face of this propaganda most Muslim countries are still sleeping and have no desire to create Islamic fronts to tackle this. Every Muslim country needs political Islam to tackle not only this imperial propaganda but also what comes after this.
