Hindutva has an agenda of reviving the old Aryan-Indus civilization stretching across Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. They call it the religious or the Hindu India (Bharata) and not the India as it was born in 1947. It is almost impossible to ascertain the ancient Indus civilization’s religion or categorize them in to a monolithic religion let alone call it Hinduism as Hindutva would want us to believe as part of their heritage and land claim of the subcontinent. This attitude mirrors the practice of Zionists who originally descended from Europe and declared themselves as natives of Palestine. This speculative theological bias and historical determinism based on this speculation to progress political agenda against minorities is what every tyrant including Hindutva wants. I call it speculative because the claim of a monolithic Hindu religion from the Indus civilization is based on sparsity of evidence, which is open to varying interpretations-not that one is stronger than other-, and the fact that the Indus script remains undeciphered pose considerable objection to this claim.
Why does Hindutva want a return to the ancient Indus Hindu religion? Apart from political reason such as vote winning among the Hindus and demonizing Muslims to further the Kashmir agenda there is also the religio-political fascist Hindu agenda. This stems from the belief of Hindutva that Aryans are the true natives of India with Hinduism as their way of life and culture contrary to other hypothesis that Aryans were immigrant invaders to India. According to the results of carbon dating techniques, the Indus ancient river valley civilization probably existed as far back as 3100 BCE and ended mysteriously around the time the Aryans arrived.
Aryan immigrant invaders consisted of multiple tribes most powerful and important of them was the Bharata tribe and hence India has been also called as Bharata. The Bharata Mata or the sacred land contains sacred sites of Hinduism scattered and unknown. Hindutva considers Islamic presence as a threat and insult to the Bharata Mata which however contradicts the 8 limbs of the Patanjali (Yoga).
The colonialist fascists Europeans descendants of Aryans however will find it ridiculous to believe that they emigrated from India from the heritage of the dark-skinned Dravidian natives. They preferred to think of the Aryan race as having brought a superior culture to India as well as to Old Europe hence contradicting Hindutva that Aryans are natives of India. I will start by introducing Hinduism first and then extrapolate this identification vis-à-vis Hindutva aims and ambitions in context. Hinduism is not a monolithic religion but is a result of cocktail of Aryan (not a race) culture, the Indus civilization culture and other ethnic groups of India and hence Hinduism is highly inconsistent, contradictory and evolving. It is thus almost impossible to generalize Hinduism except in one specific metaphysical sense. Hinduism agrees in the following: a) Eternal universe b) Karma and liberation c) Ascetism and liberation d) Core Vedic books were revealed e) Focused mostly on rituals, mythologies and superficial metaphysical philosophies. f) caste system and socio-moral laws built around it. These are major because these have been focused on by the Rsis and Brahmins.
The elaborated Hindu religion is an extrapolation and addition to these over centuries. So Hinduism unlike Islam is a direct result of the Aryan-Indus-Ethnic Indian cultural evolution. While Islam opposed the pagan culture of the natives Hinduism was formed by the pagan Aryan-Indus-Ethnic hybrid cultures. Vedic religion which is the basis of Hinduism came to dominate the Indus river valley and hence it became the defining model for Hinduism. Even though Hinduism has 330 million gods (even though some Hindus will deny it) it has one supreme being called The Force or Rta. It is the supreme force and supreme God which sets out the rules of the heavens. Rita is the one concept which pervades the whole of Ṛig vedic thought and hence it is proper to say this single force encompasses Hinduism. Well this is one aspect of contradiction as I will clarify. However, this monotheistic outlook is similar to the Supreme creator Allah who has set out the rules of the heavens as Quran mentions:
Quran 41:12 “And He completed them as seven heavens within two days (not earthly days) and inspired in each heaven its command”.
Quran 54:49 “Indeed, all things We created with a measure”
Here we get an interesting point of similarity because Quran mentions religion of mankind was one from Allah. This foundational similarity between Islam and Hinduism is striking and supportive of Quran 2:213 which states: Quran 2:213 “Mankind was [of] one religion/community [before their deviation]; then Allah sent the prophets as bringers of good tidings and warners and sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between the people concerning that in which they differed.”
The primary proponent of Rig Veda were Aryan Rsis (seers) and following them were many Vedic priests (Brahmana). A Rsi is a divinely inspired poet. Assuming that they received divine revelations from Allah It could be said that Aryan Rsis were similar to Prophets in Islam who received Allah’s revelations. These poets sang the praises of Rita which were similar to the recitations of prophets the revelations of Allah as was done by Prophet David (Pbuh) for example.
They believed the speech by which they praised Rita came through a great power of speech to Aryan Rsis. This is similar to Wahy (Divine revelation) in Islam. The Vedic priests named this power of speech as Brahman. They also defined Brahman as The Great Power. This great speech or great power (which ever you choose to identify) was associated with Aum the all-encompassing sound of the universe. If we consider Brahman as the great power who transmitted the glorified praises from Rita it can be equated with the Arch-angel Gabriel in Islam who brought Divine revelation from Allah. In Islam too there is a similar foundational concept of Allah’s glorification and Allah’s grand word encompassing the universe:
Quran 36:82 “His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, "Be," and it is.” In Islam the all-encompassing word of the universe then is Allah’s command “Be”.
Even though the foundational features of both Islam and Hinduism are monotheistic the deviation of Hinduism from Islam can only be defined by the latter part of Quranic verse Quran 2:213:
Quran 2:213 “…And none differed over the Scripture except those who were given it - after the clear proofs came to them - out of jealous animosity among themselves. And Allah guided those who believed to the truth concerning that over which they had differed, by His permission. And Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.”
If some Rsis were really prophets of Allah It is not impossible for some of them to be false prophet as well. During time of Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) there was false prophet called Musailama as well. It will be thus improper and incorrect to equate all Rsis on equal footing.
However, this hypothesis that Rsis could have been Prophets of Allah and that they received revelations from Allah become baseless when we consider nature worship in the Vedas and its lack of concept of a Creator. This lack of substance is what led the great Rsi Gautama to abandon Hinduism and found Buddhism. He therefore rejected the philosophy of the Vedic Rsis as useless.
It is plausible to propose that the concept of Rita (The Supreme Force) and the concept of great power bringing hymns (Brahman) as proposed by these polytheistic Rsis could have been borrowed from monotheistic Prophets before they emigrated to the Indus civilization. We see that Vedas give us an Islamic perspective of God and a pagan perspective. Vedas state God as formless, pure, bodyless, unborn, He alone should be worshipped, He has many names but not many forms, no likeness of Him, He has no partners. In the same time Vedas state God exist in celestial forms and human forms. Secondly the Vedas is purely a book of hymn and not a book of law and as Quran 2:213 states that Allah sent Prophets with laws to judge among people it becomes even clearer that these Rsis were no prophets of Allah. Third possibility is that these hymns were inspirations from the Djinns as stated in Quran about the interaction of both good and evil Djinns with humans. We also see the monotheistic concept of Vedic Hinduism has deviated even more over time and Brahman was trinitized and idol worship was introduced during the 100s BSE-100s CE. This trinity took three forms from whom many other countless deities descended as avatars. The three deities are: Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. Notable avatars are Ram, Krishna and their young consorts Sita and Radha.
Siva is an important one for the Hindutva agenda. Siva is the force which destroys world when it can no longer be maintained. Today Hindutva fascists are promoting the belief like European fascists that Muslims will takeover India by their demography and hence the alleged Hindu utopia will not be maintained, and the Aryan agenda will not be realized. In this way they are trying to destroy like Siva the alleged Muslim takeover. This however contradicts goddess Kali’s hatred for selfish thinkers and also the 8 limbs of Patanjali.
One of the greatest tools at the hands of Hindutva movement is the Law of Manu. The Law of Manu was a hybrid moral-religious-law code and one of the first written law codes of Asia. It was also the code of conduct for inter-caste relationships in India. The Law of Manu was a culmination of the caste system in Rig Veda X 90: “His mouth became the Brahmin; his arms were made into the Warrior, his thighs the People, and from his feet the Servants were born.”
The caste system is an illogical hierarchy. In a caste system the upper caste child will be superior to that of a lower caste adult or old man. The caste system as written down in the Laws of Manu have hit the women most hard. It gives no right or will to the women:
"In her childhood, a girl should be under the will of her father. In her youth, of her husband. Her husband being dead, of her sons. A woman should never enjoy her own will. Though of bad conduct or debauched, or even devoid of good qualities, a husband must always be worshipped like a god by a good wife."
The bride is given to a Brahmin to recognize the latter’s greatness;
The bride is abducted by a Ksatriya. Sometimes, the abduction is acted out only for the Ksatriya to prove his manhood to his peers – the bride secretly consented to it;
The most common form of marriage, where the bride is purchased;
Those rare cases where both parties consent to a marriage.
Hindutva wants India’s constitution to be a modern form of the Laws of Manu to eliminate the validity of tribal and Muslim laws that still operate. Activist Dalits oppose this position and argue that “the Laws of Manu are a prime example of high-caste Hindus’ oppression of lower castes”. Recently the Hindutva have managed to dismantle the Muslim divorce issue. Apart from the Vedic texts another inspired text is the Upanishads which is mostly an esoteric text. Other subsidiary sources of Hinduism are Bhagavat Gita (Song of God), Ramayana (A mythological account of Rama’s journey) and Puranas (book of mythology).
A major story of Gita is the story of Arjuna which portrays conflict between doing justice and being loyal to your clan. “In the name of dharma, Arjuna argues for nonviolence by assuming that to attack and kill so many leading men, nearly all of whom are fathers and husbands, will destabilize the important families and communities for which these men are responsible. The families themselves are vital to the peace and virtue of society”. So here Arjuna refers relationship over justice as the vital factor for upholding peace. However, Krishna convinces Arjuna to fight and do justice even at the expense of relationship being torn apart. Quran prefers being just even against your own relatives and yourself in Quran 4:135. In this sense at this standard of Gita justice is paramount and all attachments of relatives, nationalism or tribes are thrown away for sake of justice. The question is when Hindutva in the name of Hindu Nationalism massacres Muslims and Dalits, lynches them and oppresses them systematically which justice they are doing? Justice is you protect the minority and their worship places. If you break one for Bharat Mata, then build another for sake of Krishna.
Concluding this short summary of Hinduism vis-à-vis Hindutva agenda we can make two observations. The first one is given the contradictions, inconsistencies and dynamic changes over centuries that have gone over Hinduism it is extremely difficult to generalize Hinduism. Hinduism is mostly a mythological, superficially metaphysical and ritualistic philosophy. It concerns with hymns and rituals in veneration to avatars of the Trimurti called deities (polytheism) which later took the form of idol worship (paganism). It proposes a social caste system in Rig Veda x 90 which culminated in the laws of Manu. Its main theme is rebirth and liberation. These are major because these have been focused on by the Rsis and Brahmins. Hinduism unlike Islam is a direct result of the Aryan-Indus-Indo-Ethnic cultures. While Islam opposed the pagan culture of the natives of Arabia Hinduism was formed by the pagan Aryan-Indus hybrid culture.
The second observation is that of Hindutva’s exploitation of Hinduism in the pursuit of an aggressive supremacist Aryan utopia on the land of Bharata. Every non-Hindu is a destroyer of Brahmic order which complicates Hindutva’s realization of laws of Manu and impedes the path to liberation.
